Hello, how to configure my wireless router WNR500 to my existing wireless network

Typically, to incorporate an access point into an existing network, one must set the wireless channel, SSID, MAC address, and encryption to be the same as the host router effectively duplicating the network so that clients would be unable to distinguish the two networks. I have had marginal success with this in using non-identical routers but I may also be missing a component.
