When people hear the word sociopath, they think of mass muderers mostly. But people are only called "sociopaths" when they're violent: Consider ALL the people with the same behavioral patterns except without the violence!
For example, Hitler hated the jews, hated gypsies, etc. Had he not hated anyone, he would have still been angry about the way Germany failed in WWI, about how the Brittish overpunished Germany, and about how some people were taking advantage of German poverty. Without hate, he still would have gone to war and chosen to conquor neighboring nations, not because he hated them, but because he thought it was owed him.
Now consider how many other people have this same sense of entitlement. The same lack of compasion. The same egocentricity. The same features you see in the most infamous sociopaths, but without the same hate or direct violence. You see, sociopaths like to manipulate people, so a kinder, gentler sociopath may be called by another name, while having a similar personality.
Given that, look at wealthy people in general, via the traditional stereotypes; for example, people donating to charity not because they want to help others, but because it makes them look like good people.
When a person brags "I donated 5 million dollars to help the starving children in Somalia", did they really do it to help the children, or did they do it to help themselves?
It's possible that the "Greatest people in the world", those that gather the most respect, are simply self-serving egocentrist, looking for a means to prop themselves up. They see people as tools to be used for their own gratification. Doesn't that make them sociopaths?

I like to think of the outcome in such situation, since I don't know the person or care about him/her: as long as the person gave that much, who cares, it's still gonna save some kids.
There are situations just like this one, where although the intention at heart wasn't too moral, the outcome was good enough it just doesn't matter, if the receiver gets some good out of it. I mean, why should I waste my time giving the moral speech to such a person if the outcome was still good, and I don't know her enough? Besides, the people I know and respect and are close to me are people I know would do things unselfishly, so nah...

Obviously I'm not speaking of ordinary people, I'm speaking of powerful people who do "good deeds" for the sole purpose of enhancing their public influence.

Well the thing is, we go around degrading people for some perceived problem or praising people for some perceived merrit, isn't the INTENT what we should judge people on? If you find a person has devoted his life to helping people and never sought recognition for it, isn't that person more noble? When you get a flat tire and someone stops to help you, does the job, and leaves without giving you his name, doesn't that speak to the honesty of the person's motivation?
Or to put it more bluntly, if some greedy prick has a company where he pays everyone crap, mistreats them badly, fires them without cause and so forth, then donates millions of dollars to charity in order to put on a public face, shouldn't the harm he's done to everyone else be considered the greater factor towards his value as a person?

Oh I agree with you...I just meant in the case of the kids. You know most big corps. and the super rich do things for tax breaks, or so it seems. and the "Oh look what I did for humanity, don't you love me now?".
Exactly. Corporations are often treated as people too! They have a certain "individuality" in certain types of trials. But if corporations are treated this way, then can't we call most of them sociopathic organizations?

Do you think that pay as you go tax would work....but I guess if it was good for main stream Americans, we'll never see it.
No income tax just a fed sales tax...
LOL, you know how they get away with a lot of stuff? Nike pays their workers very well, but their workers don't make their products!
Seriously, the hire out the labor in Vietnam through another company, I think it's a Korean company. So they can claim "We don't do any business in Vietnam". Hence, no human rights abuses. LOL.

Sales tax as a substitute for income tax is similar to the other competing idea: The Flat Tax.
It's been proposed before, "Hey, let's make the income tax rate a flat rate so everyone pays the same!" The idea is usually promoted to low wage workers as a way of being fair and getting rich people to pay their share. It's really a scam!
OK, imagine for a minute that the current tax rate is something like 8% for a certain sized family making $40k/yr, and 34% for a same sized family making $400k/yr. Instituting a flat tax of 24% wouldn't help the poorer family, it would hurt them. It wouldn't hurt the richer family, it would help them. Yet people try to scam this idea off to poor people.
A sales tax is just the same, it's a flat tax. It hurts the poor most. Take me for example, I'm so poor I qualify for a 100% tax return. That is, I pay no income tax. I'm so poor, I have to let certain bills slide sometimes to pay others. If you were to tax me on the necessities of life or the minimal conveniences, I'd have to let more bills slide, in fact I'd loose a utility. The phone would go first, now how do I contact people about those job offers?
So sales tax creates an undue burden on poor people. People on Fox News would probably like it a lot, since most of the commentators are wealthy business men.

That's not the way I thought proponents explained it...I under stood that day to day necessities would not be taxed in the same way, say like a Hummer as opposed to food etc. But I half read things sometimes and get things twisted....but still argue...lol go figger...
Simply put, the FairTax replaces the way we're currently taxed - based on our annual income - with a tax on goods and services. The FairTax is a voluntary “consumption" tax: the more you buy, the more you pay in taxes, the less you buy, the less you pay in taxes.
It's simple.
Everyone pays their fair share of taxes, and with the FairTax rebate, spending up to the poverty level is tax free. The Federal government is fully funded, including Social Security and Medicare, and you don't need an expert to determine your Federal taxes.
You should know how things work: First idea, tax cars at a higher rate, but then poor people can't afford transportation. Next idea: Tax SUV's at a higher rate, but SUV's and a farmer's pickup are built on the same chassis are are pretty much equal as far as regs, so now the farmer can't afford to replace his pickup. So then you tax only vehicles costing more than $50k, but some guy who makes 40k a year renting out 3 limos gets screwed. So now you only tax vehicles that aren't used for personal use (sounds more and more complicated, no?), and everybody starts claiming they use their vehicles for work at least part of the time, etc etc etc.

You pay the higher rate all year long, then get reimbursed for $18k worth (if the poverty line for your family is $18k) at the end of the year. The problem? You are already being taxed so high that you loose your housing before you get the refund. The good news? With the refund, you can pay for half of next year's housing. Assuming you're responsible with your refund, which most people aren't.
This is starting to look an awefull lot like the flat rate income tax all over again, rich guys looking to reduce their tax rate to that of the middle class.

I think the system we have in place is fair for the most part. The short form is easy enough for most people, the rates are graduated to be affordable for everyone, and the only reason I have an accountant do my taxes is because he's really good at finding ways to get me free money. Every year I get back 1-2 grand, and I don't pay withholdings (that means I get 1-2 grand in free money from the IRS and state tax rebates).

Lets assume (for the sake of argument, since I don't know if Nike pays 27cents an hour to workers) that Nike pays 27 cents and hour to workers and this makes everybody upset that these people are not getting paid enough, but they are comming to work everyday, and they could chose some other line of work, its not like they are being forced to work at Nike;
But suppose Nike decides to pay these workers 90cents an hour or over 3 times the going wages for this area, Then would the public accept Nike as doing the right thing by offering jobs at over 3X what anyone else in the area offers, or would they compare the wages with what they make in their economy, and still be outraged and want Nike to pay wages and compensation comparable to $10 per hour, or roughly 30X what others make???
