I've been trying to resetup a network in a new apartment
w/ 2 comps both running Win XP. I connect to the
internet using a cable modem. I cannot share anything
between the computers. They are both able to access the
internet, although one seems unable at times to open a
connection to the interenet unless the other connects
first. Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to fix
this. Any help is much appreciated

I can't help you with a solution(other than reseting the
router w/both computers on-on occasion) because I am
having the same problem. Sometimes the computer's just
can't connect. I think it may have something to do with
the encryption.

For the connection between the two computers, its a
computer setup problem. Assign the same workgroup name to
both computers and turn off software firewalls and ICF on
the computers (or add the LAN subnet to the trusted zone of
the firewall).

For the Internet connection issue, start by comparing the
TCP/IP settings on both computers. You may also want to run
a tracert to microsoft.com or any other site and see what
results you are getting.

What router do you use, or does the modem works as router?
Are the computers connected using a wireless?

Milbo, your issue shouldn't have to do with WEP encryption.
If it can connect often, but not always, it might be
interference, or maybe the wifi card and router are set to
different channels. If you using an USB card, you may want
to assign it a static IP.

If you can get to the Internet but not connect between the
two computers, you probably have a software firewall or ICF
in one of the computers. That leads to the "random"
behavior depending on which computer is turned on first in
the morning (and thus becomes master browser).
