my hp6540y with 8 gigs won't boot if ypou add additonal memory It's spec call for up to 16 gig but won't boot with more than 8

Go back to 8Gb and check in the BIOS for a setting that may allow you to upgrade. I Googled and this http://gdgt.com/hp/pavilion/6540y/specs/ doesn't mention scaling up to 16Gb - from where does your information come?

Well, that answer was a long time coming.

I have to assume they published two different spec sheets - one for you and one they put online. I'd have to say the online one is correct since when you tried it, any more than 8Gb failed. Seems they packed the wrong sheet when they sent out your machine - mistakes happen, I'm afraid.
