I am searching for a reliable external hard drive for my Dell PC, OS 98se.
I did not know that so many brands existed. I am considering:
1. Toshiba
2. Iomega
3. LaCie
4. Seagate
5. Western Digital
6. Maxtor
7. Iogear
8. Fantom
I have researched most of them and, of course, their advertising claims
promises fantastic results. I need one in the 200 to 300-gig range. What
would you recommend? Thanks in advance.

2 x 200 (Belkin fan cooled cases) and 1 x 30 (Amacom no cooling) external
Maxtor's. Also 2 x 80gig Maxtor internal.

No problems here..........

I have the Western Digital 160 gig external. Can be used on firewire or
USB and it has the 8 meg cash. The 8 meg cash is certainly better then
the 2 meg cash.

I bought a Maxtor 250 Gig and it ran so hot that I returned it. Bought a
Western Digital and it's working fine.

perhaps we should also indicate our locations for atmospheric conditions.

I am in the UK where outside temps are in the region of 10 to 15C most of
the year and my normal inside temp is 20C.

I've burned up four Maxtors in external cases. Garbage.

WD is a good choice.

Win98SE might be a problem. Make sure the drive supports it.

Depends on what you use it for. If it is for backups, which is pretty light
use, it will be fine. I was using mine as a drive in my home theatre system
and it was playing and copying multi-gig movie files.

Burned up good.

You're STILL trolling here? All because of an off-hand comment on another
newsgroup? You REALLY need to get a life

You know, if you're going to change the name you use in newsgroups, I'm
guessing so you appear to be somebody else, you really ought to change
the email address you list as well. Changing the name from Gommas Pyle
to Malcomb Glazer while leaving your email as Gommas@Pylebtinternet.com
isn't real effective.

Oh, and the guy who's trying to take control of Manchester United is
Malcolm Glazer, not Malcomb Glazer.

As Tom Scales said, you REALLY need to get a life.

He's really not very bright. He keeps posting from the BTInternet server
and just changing his reply-to email address. He made an incredibly silly
commend on another newsgroup and didn't appreciate it when I pointed it out.
He's been trolling around after me ever since.

It's pretty entertaining since he is SO bad at it.
