Hi

Just added a 512Mb DDR2 400 stick to a new dell Inspiron 6000 and the
native 256Mb won't work with it?

Surely you don't have to have matched pairs on modern Dell machines??
I have a 256 and 128Mb in my Thinkpad T23 OK...???

Any advice appreciated

MG

according to Crucial.com you need

256MB - CT432009 DDR2 PC2-3200 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED
Possibly the differenc in the memory is casuing the problem was it sold as
working in the 6000?

I have found Crucial to be a good place to go for memory. Reasonable prices
and they stand by their site. I purchased some memory for my Gigabyte
motherboard and it turns out it has 3 slots so you can use 1 double sided
and 2 single sided chips or 2 single sided chips but not 3 double or single
sided chips. Their site did not mention this and they took the memory back
no problem at all

I've got that combination in my Dell 600m with no problems. Is there is a
difference in
the speed or parity?

Actually yes, they should be matched pairs. They may work as unmatched
pairs, but you've significantly slowed down the memory bandwidth of your
laptop.

This machine uses DDR2, not DDR, so it can write to two memory sticks at the
same time, but ONLY if they are matched.

The second slot is inactive either with one or other inserted... so
can only use the original 256 or new 512Mb in slot 1... what the hell
is wrong?? Its brand new!!
