Alright, I thought this might possibly go any of the processor, memory, or MB forums, so I can repost there if need be, but I had a few questions that would sound strange if broken up.

I'm currently running an Athlon 1400 on an Abit K7G, with 2x256 Kingston PC2100.

I'd like to upgrade to an Athlon Barton 2800 on the Asus A7N8X with 2x512 Corsair Xtreme 2-2-2-5.

However, I need to do this upgrade as slowly as possible, so as to not upset the wifey =) This means... 1 part every few weeks.

Now, the first thing I need to buy is the Asus Mobo. Will my Athlon 1400 run on said Mobo? I realize this is the wrong forum, but would my memory AND processor run on said Mobo? I don't care how crappily they run, any upgrade should be faster than my current setup.

So, assuming they will work, should I upgrade the processor or the RAM next? I kinda feel as though the RAM should be upgraded next, as I'm not sure the Barton would play nicely with PC2100.

I also *do not* plan on overclocking, but I'm slightly confused - the Barton runs a 333Mhz FSB, correct? Every post I've read here and in the memory forum says that PC 2700 is fine unless you want to overclock, but since the Barton runs at 333Mhz. FSB, isn't it best to get PC3200 so that they run synchronously?

Thanks for your help... I'm not a n00b, but back in my day we basically only had Intel processors, and they only worked with one RAM speed =)

Your Athlon 1.4GHz will run fine. I've tried Thunderbird 1.2GHz amd Duron 900MHz on my A7N8X Deluxe and they worked.
PC2100 is DDR266, PC2700 is DDR333 while PC3200 is DDR400. If you don't O/C, running two sticks of PC2700 is in sync, running PC3200 is async (Thanks to the Dual Channel DDR), so don't get confuse as Barton is 333FSB which runin sync with DDR333 not DDR400. And one more thing, get ThoroughBred-B 2800+ instead of Barton, both of them run at 333FSB while ThoroughBred-B would be cheaper since the extra cache won't do much benefit.

My PC has gone to hell... because it's a killing machine...

Thanks TKH - also, any idea on which I should upgrade first? Ram or CPU? I'll probably buy the MoBo on Monday. Ram / CPU may take 3 -6 weeks. I'm thinking the Ram would be the best, since the processor prices fall so fast, and I'm pretty sure that the PC2700 will be backwards compatible with my Athlon 1400 =)

Get the RAM first. As you said, CPU prices fall very fast but the RAM don't. So you should buy the RAM first then go for CPU. As long as your mobo supports DDR RAM there would be no worries on running them along with any supported CPU. (Like I said, even Duron 900MHz works)

You never know how stupid you are until you have done something stupid enough for you to realize it.
