I have a new HP g7-1227 Notebook it has 4 GB RAM. In the system properties it says there is a second empty DIMM slot. Can I put another DIMM in there, is it even worth trying and if so how many GB can be on the second DIMM? Would this help performance at all?

Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

It will take 8Gb and in a Windows 7 system it will make a difference but 4Gb should be adequate. Here's the specification from Crucial's website and they want around $45 for it. You're probably looking at half that for the 4Gb upgrade but be careful on e-Bay or similar to ensure you get only what's printed below.

8GB Kit (4GBx2)
DDR3 PC3-10600 • CL=9 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1333 • 1.35V • 512Meg x 64 • • Part #: CT2675171

Alternatively, go to your country's local site of http://www.crucial.com and take the online scan - the ActiveX object is safe and harmless - and get your own local price.
