which should I choose? to make a server, running FTPD and mldonkey, I'm afraid the narrow bandwidth of SDRAM will become the bottlenake of dual p3 system, is it really serious?

And how's the performance difference between 256K-L2 P3 and 512K-L3 P3-T?

Thanx.

Have you priced it out yet? I wonder if you could get a dual P4 system.

I love my dual PIIIs for multitasking - I wouldn't consider trading them for anything less then a single P4 2.4.

I gather FTPD is an FTP server, what is mldonkey?

There are so many different kinds of servers - if it's disk intensive you'd probably be better off with a Tualatin Celeron processor and a SCSI disk.

And again the difference between the 256k L2 PIIIs and the 512k PIII-Ss depends on the application. PIII-Ss are much better for multitasking.

Unfortunately the P4s are not SMP capable, unless you look at Xeons. And they are $$$. Actually the chips are no longer that expensive, but the motherboards are.

Why don't you try AMD? AMD 's cpu are designed for multitasking
