Seems to me that it would be very easy for some crooked politicians to skim off a few million and no one would be the wiser... enter Kofi Annan...

I understand everybody is worried about getting the money where it ought to be spent, and the red cross is good destination for your money, and there are a couple more around. However the money is not only needed for first aid purposes, lots of money is needed for rebuilding and of course there's going to be a number of people getting filhty rich because of that (usually these people are rich already).

Let's assume that its just the 30% of the money that will actually get to where it was meant for (I do not fully agree with that definition but I go along with it), if it takes 70% of the money to get 30% of it to where it matters, is that a reason not to give the money? Feel free to bring the money over there yourself (and even then you will find you will need to spend a lot of the money to get the rest to where you think it should be).

It always costs money to get money or goods at the right place, and it is an illusion that the corruption already present there will not get more than their unfair share of it. If the choice is between no money or just part of the money to who it was meant for, I choose part of the money.

As an illustration of how sick some people can be if they can earn some money, houses were looted in Sweden once names of swedish people that died became public. This is not in some third world country where noone has anything (and thus looting becomes irresistable to some), but in Sweden for cryin out loud. Others have been trying to rip people off by saying they had possession of dead bodies of loved ones.

Being a self-righteous dutchman I loathe corruption but in the order of things, as long as enough of the money gets through, I can live with that better than all the sick perverts out there trying to rip people off that are grieving for their lost loves.
