Over the past few weeks I have gone from a consistant 50K connection
down to a 37K connection. I even took and reinstall everything from
scratch and the same problem exist. If I take from an inital boot I can
usally get a 45K connection but after that I get when trying to connect
is a disconnect and the dialing. The modem is Gateway V.92 PCI Soft
Modem R1 (Palmer) [Part #6002118] I have tried all three driver
suggested nothing make a difference. Getting a lot of disconnect too.
Have tried these drivers 9519160_XP_2K, 9520523_xp_2k and 9523470 with
no luck.

The only upgrade that I have made lately is a Belkins USB card though
this issue started before adding the device. I did have problems with
the 9519160_XP_2K drive though it keep causing my computer to reboot
after using it. Since I have the 9520523_xp_2k no more reboots but still
the low connection at 27 to 37K.

Have you tried this machine on any other phone lines or at anyone else's
house? There could be issues outside of the box that are degrading your
modems performance. The last mile for dial-up connections has the greatest
impact on the actual connection speed. Something so simple as a some heavy
rain or even just high humidity can case problems.

No I have not tried it elsewhere, I think that I am going to buy a new
modem just to have one hand. Any suggestions as long as voicemodem use
internet calling Net2Phone and Skype. Any pro's and con's of USB modem.

I'd bet good money it is NOT anything in the machine. It is a bad phone
line or switching card in the telco office. I am having a similar
problem here. The phone has some background static but VERY
intermittent. The poor line has dropped my 50,666 normal connection down
to 46,000 or lower. I know the problem is in the underground line but
the phone co. doesn't show a problem when they test the line. Mid winter
there was a lightning strike nearby that took out the neighbors phone
but they say that couldn't be a problem... rightttt..
To make SURE it isn't in your home wiring connect up the modem input
line with the telco interface on the outside of your house. If your
connection improves the wiring in your house is suspect. If not it is in
the line somewhere else. If it is still there, get on the phone and
complain to the telco office that you keep hearing noise on the line,
crunch some potato chips in the background if needed to make them hear
it.
