How to turn off flash

i have the canon rebel eos 300D digital and i cant figure out how to turn off the flash! it's very irratating to only have it on one setting because otherwise the flash pops up.

On page 41 of the manual - http://ec1.images-amazon.com/media/i3d/01/A/man-migrate/MANUAL000016496.pdf - there is a Flash Off available under Programmed Image Control Modes.

The round dial on top. It is same dial which controls the settings for portrait, action, etc. It should have an icon of a lightning with a slash through it.
