I am using Outlook Express 6 in XP Home and the newsreader still makes
mistakes assigning the newsgroup reply to the wrong news server. My
understanding is that this bug was solved by an update, but I am totally
up-to-date and am still having the problem.

What gives?

The update in question is not offered via Windows Update (yet). See if
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/900930 fixes it.

AKA "Account/Watch" bug
http://www.insideoe.com/problems/bugs.htm#acctwatch

Access this and other MS newsgroups using the MS newsserver, leaving your
current one in place, and post a few messages using it. At one point you'll
experience the bug, especially if you have messages on either server marked
as Watched.

Thanks for that link I never noticed that bug, but I have seen the OE
signature separator bug as it just happened to one of my posts. I had
problems with that update KB900930 killing OE so I removed it. I am going to
try it again.

Make sure OE (and all other IE windows) is closed before installing it.
Also disable AV. 900930 only updates MSOE.DLL and INETCOMM.DLL so it
shouldn't "kill" OE.

This seems to be the same update I got from WinUpdate (under Software,
Optional) that I got yesterday morning. The more info link refers to that
KB number.

Kewlmundo! I didn't know 900930 was being offered via Optional Software
Updates. That's how 887797 was made available when it was released in
Dec-04 and now it's offered directly via Windows Update (although it's
hardly a Cumulative Update).

Thanks for your feedback.
