What does SPDIF stand for and what does it do

can someone tell me (a complete technophobe) what SPDIF means on my tv.?

Sony Philips Digital Interconnect Format. It's an audio connector that is capable of sending multi channel surround sound to a home theater receiver. SPDIF can be either Optical(Toslink), or Coaxial(RCA Type).
