CPU-RAM combo best for Audio/Video?

Hello folks.

Is there any truth, especially in "every-day real-world" computing, to one CPU-RAM combination* having an advantage over another regarding video (and maybe also audio) applications?

*I am addressing Athlon XP CPU with DDR RAM vs. Pentium 4 CPU with RD RAM (vs. Pentium 4 CPU with DDR RAM).

Thanks much!

Are you doing any editing/encoding? If you're just setting up an entertainment center, then it really doesn't matter in the least. a duron with 128mb will be the same as a p4 3.06 with 1024mb rdram.

I don't know what you mean by "every-day real-world" computing, and where you say you want to use video and audio applications. What applications, specifically?

Hello.

Thanks for your reply.

<< Are you doing any editing/encoding? >>

I'm thinking about digital video editing and digital audio editing specifically (capturing, recording, sampling, editing, etc.).

<< I don't know what you mean by "every-day real-world" computing, >>

I mean as opposed to benchmarks and/or any expectations as to how something should "theoretically" work -- so what people are experiencing on a daily basis at their computers.

I am interested in reading your thoughts.

I feel like I once heard something about how a Pentium 4 with RD RAM does "calculations" differently that makes it all the more suited for video applications (and maybe audio applications, too?). (I feel like the word "calculations" came up as well as maybe the words "streaming" and "data" too.)

Does anyone know what it may be that I think I am remembering?

Thanks much!

I would suggest nothing less than 1 gig of ram. Speed won't be a factor, but volume will. Personally, I would say max out what your motherboard can support, especially if you are doing serious video editing. If it's just small clips, you'd get by with 1 gig and a decent processor. AMD or Intel won't matter, but single vs dual may. You might find a good dual MP would be a good solution for you.

I use a Athlon XP@ 2463MHz with 2 sticks of 512MB XMSPC2700 Corsair DDRRAM@ 362MHz and it kicks ass.

eBay, kick ass!
