Boot from cd dell dimension e521

I am trying to go into the bios to reformat my pc ... I want to set it up to boot from the cd. I can\'t get any number on the HDD when I set it so the number 1 is on the cd-rom. I am worried that it won\'t recognize the HDD and therefore won\'t reinstall winxp. How can I do this? Should I just proceed without any number on the HDD?
