Hey gang I need some help in understanding something with my new CPU. I recently purchased a new AMD Athlon XP 2000+ processor and a Gigabyte GA-7VAX Mobo. When you set-up the mobo for your applicable CPU you have a set of jumpers to set your CPU clock speed (ie...100MHZ, 133 MHZ or 166 MHZ). I have to set clock speed to 100 MHZ or the computer will not boot up, this is my confusion. I thought with my processor I would be able to set higher clock speed. Was wondering if anyone can shed some light on this. I am relatively new (2 years) to puters and really trying to learn.. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ok, see page 10 of the user manual... put all switches in the large switch group in the OFF position. The smaller switch (or jumper) should be in the 133/166 position.

Now turn off the power at the back of your computer...

Wait a few seconds for everything to drain to 0 volts...

Hold down the END key on your keyboard...

While still holding the END key, turn the power back on...

(Note, on some versions it's the INSERT or ESC key so you may have to try all 3)

This should take you to the BIOS (page 25 of the manual) where you need to check all the settings... for the purposes of testing be sure all CPU, aGP, PCI and Memory settings are on AUTO. (You can mess with it later, after you're sure everything is working)

Also take note of the recommended memory listing on page 99 of the manual. There's no promise the thing will work properly with other kinds of memory...

If you don't have a manual you can get a copy in PDF form here:

That was informative. Isn't great when someone has a hardware problem you KNOW you can fix.
