Hi,
I am running Win 98SE on Celeron 500/Intel CA810 combination. Every so often after I shut down my PC and start it up later on, the year would get screwed up. The rest of the time stamp would be correct but only year shown would be 2023. I would correct it to 2002 but two-three restarts later it would go back to the same year 2023. Any ideas? Thanks...
That information is stored in your BIOS chip which is either hardmounted or soldered to the motherboard and not replaceable, or in a socket thats soldered to the M/B and the actual BIOS chip is removable and replaceable. I first would consider getting from the M/B manufacturers website the latest BIOS flash for your M/B and following their flash instructions to the letter, and reflashing the BIOS which will refresh all its internal programing. However if the information loss is related to possible memory failure in the BIOS chip itself, then you need to correspond by E-mail to the support section of your M/B manufacturer, and consult them on whats going on and get their suggestions on how to proceed from this point. If you are absolutely clueless as to reflashing a BIOS then go ahead to your M/B manufacturers support site for their advise. Hope this helps. Ryan

Thanks for the tip Ryan. I already tried flashing the BIOS with the latest flash but no change. Perhaps I'll try flashing it again. The only tricky thing I find is this problem is not persistant, but it repeats itself once in a while. Perhaps I have a leaking memory location in BIOS as you suggested. I don't know if there is any way of checking that? Thanks again for your replies... Igor
Hi,
I found a BIOS version on IBM web site that supports the same MB in their systems. One of the bugs they were fixing in the BIOS was actually exactly this one. So I took their latest release and flashed the MB. Since then (2 days ago) I did not have any more problems with the date! I hope it is over now :-) Thanks to all that contributed and helped with their suggestions...
You've got to have a bad BIOS chip, with todays prices your cheapest solution would probably be to replace the M/B, or live with the problem, if thats the only one you've got, however eventually the problem may get worse, and more of the stored information besides the date could get corrupted. Ease up on the BIOS flashes, you've been lucky on that part so far.

Thanks again Ryan... I have a sad feeling that you might be right... I'll leave it the way it is for now and start saving up for something better... I'll also see if I can get a replacement chip from another MB...
