Hello Stew,

Thanks for the link ... but it is funny how Symantec now announces
it has a beta NIS version even labelled "Anti-spyware edition" when
I bought 3 months ago the NIS 2005 full version which also
claims to detect and remove spyware and it did not find nor
remove a single spyware entry in my computer and I had
thousands of spyware ... I had to buy Spy Sweeper and Eliminator
to clean up the spyware ecosystem I had here ...

Regards,
Giovanni

It's worth noting that Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware offer
free spyware management software. If the trade journals are to be
believed these are perhaps the best available to manage spyware.

While both programs *basically* do what they're supposed to,
sometimes you get what you pay for... Some recent magazine
articles have suggested that their success rate isn't all
that good.

I've been using CounterSpy (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/CounterSpy.cfm),
for quite some time, and couldn't be happier.

I remember reading an article (sorry, no link) that compared solutions and,
surprisingly, Mircosoft AntiSpyware came out on top.

Indeed, on two of my pc's MS AS found things that neither Spybot nor
AdAware found.

OK I know I could goggle it, but since I'm here, is this the monthly
file that Microsoft includes when they send out their regular
scheduled patches or is it something different?

Well I just went to the Microsoft site to dl this product. I had to
run their Validation Software first so I do and when I try to run it I
get the message that the version I just d/l'ed is out of date.

Grrr. . ..

Well I finally got it on my machine and ran it. It found two
suspected items. Then out of curiosity I ran Spybot Search and
Destroy. Spybot found a suspect that MS had missed.

It looks like the rule of thumb about running Spybot and Adaware
should be expanded to include the MS spyware as well.

Since MS bought and is distributing the Giant [IIRC] pro-program,
I have added it to my routine Spybot S&D and AdAware checks. As
I have noted before, the anti-spyware/adware crowd don't seem to
be at the level of talking to each other/sharing info as the AV
crowd is, and I have often found [even with an update check on
each before my weekly run] one or the other catching the odd
SW/AW program, or more often, element of a SW/AW invader, that
the others missed.

Since I started running all three, the running the odd "free
check of your machine for SW/AW" offered by the various proware
A-SW/AW sellers hasn't caught anything missed by all three.

Each program is designed to look for different things. I run Spybot, adaware
and MS on a regular basis. If I think that I am infected with something I
will also run Webroot's Spysweeper as an added precaution. My daughter's
machine was infected recently and it took all 4 programs to dejunk it. I had
to scan the machines a few times before all of it was cleaned up. Spysweeper
is the one that really performed best in this case as Spybot and AdAware
kept coming up clean.
