When I purchased my 8400 system a few weeks ago, I configured it to have
the 160 GB NCQ Hard drive. Going into the Device manager, the model
number shone for my hard drive is a ST3160023AS, is this a NCQ hard
drive? I know the Seagate model ST3160827AS has the NCQ but does the
model ST3160023AS have it too?

thx

If I'm reading this Tom's Hardware Guide article correctly
<http://www20.tomshardware.com/storage/20040123/wd740-02.html>,
yes, it has NCQ.

according to seagate, it some models may have it and some may not... see
page 11 of the documentation...
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/manuals/sata/cuda7200_sata_pm.pdf
don't know how to help you identify if your drive has it or not but perhaps
a email sent to seagate with your model number and serial number will help.

No thats not right, if you look at the manual and click on "1.0
INTRODUCTION" in the bookmarks, it states ST3160023AS OEM hard drives
"MIGHT" be NCQ, where the ones for "Distribution" are not and lists
ST3160827AS as NCQ.
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/manuals/sata/cuda7200_sata_pm.pdf

I guess I will have to trust Dell and assume the one they gave me was a
"NCQ".

So, if I add another hard drive, it should be the ST3160827AS w/NCQ
incase I want to configure RAID, or does it matter?

Does anyone know who makes the "DELL 160GB HDD" that they list in parts
for the 8400. Dell Part #: 341-1086

That model does not have NPQ. I have that model and the ST3160827AS which
does have it. See page 1 of the Seagate documentation referred to in
Christoper's post.

last i checked saying "some models may have it and some models may not" as i
said, or "may support" as seagate said is the same as saying it "might" as
you said. so what's not right? is it that that you didn't notice that "1.0
introduction" is the same page number 11 that i referred you to?

If memory serves me, the Intel Application Accelerator app will let you know
if the drive has NCQ.
