How hot should my XP 1700+ be?

I run a XP 1700+ on an MSI KT3V. The pcAlert4 software has me running at 50C when I boot up. Is this hotter than it should be? My buddy's 1400+ runs in the upper 30's, and I was concerned over the 20 degree difference. Thanks.

Say, what version of DOS is on this sparc thingie?

Nah its fine. if you get up into the mid 60's then you might have reason to be worried.

Half the problem with "what is the normal temp" is that the reported temp varies so wildly depending on method of measurement and brand/type of motherboard.
anything from 40 to 60 usually, though extremes do exist.

e.g. My 8k3a+ reads way high, reporting 65-75C for normal room temp, getting up to 86C without any crashing or locking up, while the REAL heatsink temp is only around 35-40.

It will run at those temps, but you might want to consider a better cooler for it.

As usual, I remmend a hybrid heatsink (copper bottom, aluminum fins) with a thermal resistence less than .6

Check your HSF's installation to see if it's setup properly. I have XP1700+ on Asus A7N266-VM (NForce1) with stock HSF, and it's mostly ~33°C idle/42°C at load.

 Good or Bad have no meaning at all, depends on what your point of view is.
