Tech: Nip It Score Motor

A friend who does not use the Internet much just called with a question
on a Bally Nip It he is trying to repair. I thought I would post my
understanding of the problem here, and see if anyone has any ideas or
documents that might assist in this repair. I checked Google, but did
not find this specific issue addressed.

The machine is working all the way with one exception. After a game is
completed, a dead ball is fired out. So, the machine is successfully
activating the Game Over relay, but not fast enough to deaden the ball
kickout switch. As I understand the situation, the game over switch is
supposed to cancel out the other switches, so it seems to be a timing
issue.

My friend has gone through the schematic in detail, but it does not
have a diagram of the score motor switches. He needs to determine
which score motor switches handle which functions. He has gone over
every single switch and they appear to be in order, but it is hard to
tell without the diagram.

A schematic vendor was contacted, and they indicated that the score
motor switch diagram was not part of the schematic, but rather a
separate document. Does anyone have this document available?
Alternatively, has anyone else dealt with this issue? My friend has
been repairing EMs for 30 years, so he has done all of the obvious
things, but any thoughts you might have on potential solutions would be
greatly appreciated.

if he plays the ball the spits out does the game operate normaly? pop
bumpers work, machine scores? even in game over mode? if so, check
the ball counter stepper, my hot line was doing that and it was the
ball stepper.

Once the game is over, it is over. He can plunge the extra ball and
nothing scores, none of the switches work. Apart from the extra (dead)
ball, everything appears to be as it should be. Thanks for the
thought. I think this one gets a little complicated because it is a
multi-ball game.

I contacted him and provided this advice. He has already cleaned the
untis and checked it for function, but will go back and look at it
again.

Any other suggestions from ctstep5 or others?

doing some research here sounds like it could be the player unit doing
it to? might want to check that. I know on my Williams star pool the
player unit is AFU and it will do some freaky thiings in multi player.
hope that helps. My bally is a singleplayer so I cant help you with
the player unit

If you dont get any furhter help here check out my yahoo group, there
you will hopefully find your answer

the sm switches should all be on the schematic.

however, my guess is that it is not a sm switch.

look at the outhole coil circut to see what switches are there. i'd bet
that you will find one that opens at game over and that should be your
problem.

i looked at some bally schematics and it looks like the ball return
coil is cut off by opening a switch on the match trip relay.

this is a normally closed switch that opens when the last ball drains.
the match trips out and opens the ball return coil circut before the sm
switch can fire it.

if this switch is not adjusted and remains closed when the match trips
out the ball return coil will be fired by the sm and kick out the ball.

John:

Thanks very much. I will pass on this information to my friend and
report back if that was the issue. Your help is greatly appreciated.
