My Win XP Desktop, taskbar, and system tray no longer load. I have to start
all apps via Task Manager. I have run this group's recommended programs from
Kellys Korner (line 195, etc), but these did not make a difference.
I have also run system restore and that did not help either.
I would like to try reinstalling XP, but I do not get a prompt to boot from
CD. When attempting to reinstalling from the CD, I get an error that says I
cannot install it because the os on my pc is newer than the one on the disk.
I look forward to learning the solution to this problem! Thanks.

Before you reinstall XP try this :
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm The rreason you get the message that the OS on your PC is newer than your
disk is probably because you have installed SP2. I am not sure of that but I
believe I read that on another newsgroup.
I hope this will help. Please post back and let us know.

I already tried the kelly's korner taskbar plus - it did not fix the problem.
I also tried the link to the instructions that Wesley sent.
The first option involved making some decisions about drivers. I haven't a
clue as to what to do with that one.
The second options says to create a new user account. Step #8 says to
"Expand Local User Groups" from the Computer Management Console. That option
is not available in the list to choose from.
The final option suggests choosing an option that does not appear when I
attempt to reinstall XP.

Trudy,
You probably have XP Home, use this method to create a new user account
instead...
[[To open the User Accounts tool, open Control Panel from the Start menu,
and then double click User Accounts.]]

[[Do not use a repair or in-place upgrade to try to resolve a problem with a

related to a user account, password, or local profile, create another user
account (if you can), and then log on to that account to see if the problem
is resolved.]]

What option does not appear when trying to reinstall XP?

Yay! I closely followed the "How to Perform a clean Book" instructions and
the problem seems to be resolved. I still have to go back an determine which
entry the issue is in.
Thanks so much to both of you for your help.
