Regarding the clock in the XP system tray, is there any way to change the
format to military time?

Regional and Language Options > Customize > Time > HH:mm:ss

Would you like it read: "--------"? If not, go to Start/Run/Regedit and
naviagate to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\International

Once there, in the right pane double click sTimeFormat and type in: HHmm
