Black screen

Dell progress bar, windows xp, windows is starting up and BIOS will flash than the screeen goes blank. Tried the following, startup disk, original windows CD still a blank screen. The computer is non-responsive when I try to reboot with Ctrl, Alt, Delete, will not pull up the task manager. Any ideas

have you tried booting to safe mode?
(tap F8 repeatedly after hitting the on button)

Could be a driver issue, or a virus, or a corrupt file system. (in that order)

try to get to safe mode, then try to use a XP install disk to repair the system files. if ur still unable to get anything, then re-install...

Tried safe mode menu does not appear. The original windows cd spins but the screen remains blank

unable to reinstall things flash on screen but disapear. I have a spare video card tried it same thing

Well I feel real dumb. I did not check the monitor. Turns out the power supply was failing. the computer was working as it should. Opened the monitor and the power supply board had a burned IC. The board was too far gone to repair. Thanks to everyone that replied.
