Compaq hdd replacement

Is there a way around Compaq's proprietary crap to install a different HDD?

I have a Presario 2195US. The HDD is almost dead. I have other HDDs that I can use but the proprietary Compaq crap is not allowing me to install them.

See if you can find an identical drive on ebay.

Dell used to do the same with optical drives on some of their models and HP do it with wireless modules -- maddening.
