Ok for Windows updat one of the updates it offers under the driver section is: Microsoft Processor Driver Version 5.1.2600.1152.

What the hell is this? Is this necessary? It says supported hardware is te "K7 Processor." Ive been running the system fine without it. They say if it aint broken dont fix it....

Windows XP has certain parameters that can be adjusted to optimize for Athlon XP.

Have you run any benchmarks? Any hard numbers from anyone out there?

Here's a few examples...

If you look in the registry at

hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\session manager\memory management

You will find a setting for "SecondLevelDataCache" that can be tweaked to get the most performance from AMDS with larger on-die caches.

You can also add the dword value "LargePageMinimum" == FFFFFFFF which will help AMDS arbitrate video memory more reliably.

at
hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\session manager\Priority Control

You can adjust the "Priority Separation" to 1 which makes multi-tasking much more efficient with AMD.

hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\session manager\

You can set "Enable MCA" to 0 and "Enable MCE" to 0 which gives a bit of a boost with AMDS.

You can also set "Processor Control" to 2 to minimize timing errors.

So.. Yes there are AMD specific optomizations you can do to XP and 2k.

does the AMD driver do these things automatically?
or do i have to edit the registry manually to enable/disable those things?

Long live ATI.

Well, I'm not Teq, and I can't speak for the new drivers, but I know certain programs like TweakXP will make some of the registry changes automatically, you just have to click a checkbox...

Some of both. The driver adds better timings for the faster XP Cpus introduced since WinXP came out and it tweaks a few registry settings as well.

You should at least check the ones I listed.
