I was looking at the datasheet for the p4 3.06 ht 800mhz retail package on the intel website and it didn't inclue information about how much airflow the fan gives. Does anyone know. I need to know so I can compare with other commercial fans and see if I really want to buy a 3rd party fan. Thanks
Neither AMD nor Inteal really give you good specs for their coolers, and they should... for the very reason you've cited.
But, in any case, Airflow is not the key specification you need to look at when buying a cooler... The one to watch is "Thermal Resistence", expressed in Celcius Degrees per Watt.
Thermal Resistence (TR) is a direct measure of how much the temperature of a cooled object will rise in relation to the heat it produces.
At a thermal resistence of 1, the cooled object will rise 1 degree in temperature for each watt of thermal energy it produces.
At TR == .5 it only goes up half a degree... or 1 degree for every 2 watts.
So the smaller the number the better.
The fan's airflow rating does matter but since it directly affects the thermal resistence it is a secondary concern. Not enough airflow will increase the TR of the cooler, allowing the chip to run hotter and that would be reflected in the Thermal Resistence specification.
