Typing the letter "c" into I.E.'s location box produces a list of
previously typed sites that begin with that letter, as an example.

Clearing HISTORY or TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES does not affect this list.
The names therein do not appear in the registry or MRU lists.

What's the secret to remove them, please?

Seeing that the default harddisk is 'c', that might not be the best letter to
test with.

I tried working out your problem, and clearing the history removed the
wesbites I had been to. BUT, it did not delete files i had accessed through
windows explorer (you know, the standard application used to view your file
system).

As to remove those, I have no idea, but clearing history definately cleans
out your recently viewed sites in the drop down box.

o yea. If your rather conscious of your privacy, you might want to set the
"Days to keep pages in history" box to 0. Hopefully windows will see this as
null, and will not log your viewed sites at all.

Thanks. Yes, these are files from c:\, not Net locations. Privacy isn't
the issue. Curiousity is.^

Hello dev,

The solution to your problem is simple, here it goes:

Make sure that you are in Internet Explorer
click tools
click internet options
click on the content tab
click the autocomplete button
make sure the web addresses check box is not checked
click ok

This is good, Angel - for vanquishing them until the feature is reenabled.
Then they appear once more - leaving the the underlying question: Where
are they kept? Or how can they be deleted?

Hi dev,

I just went into the instructions that I sent you put a check mark on web
addresses and all the previous sites that I went to were not visuable. Maybe
you need to delete your internet history first, then try the suggestion that
I gave to you earlier.(taking the check mark off the web addresses check
box). If that does not work the try the links that were sent to you by
another user related to the same idea that I sent you. Those links might be
detailed, and may help you out even more.

Yup, tried it all. UNchecked the box, then deleted HISTORY. As long as
"web addresses" is not enabled the list does not display. Recheck that
option, and back the old entries come.^ A mystery.

You can clear the information stored here in the registry:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedUrls

In the right-hand pane, delete items with "url1", "url2" and so on.

Also there is a hidden files in the Temporary Internet Folder, if you type
the following in the Run dialog box, you should be able to get there

cmd /k cd "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\content.ie5"

This may be the information you are looking for.

Fine resources as usual, Kelly. Unfortunately, the drop down c"\... items
do not appear in the registry, and I revisited every key listed above.
HISTORY directory cannot be deleted, but nothing under it seems related to
this issue. Ran your tool as well. All entries in I.E. persist.

Hardly earth shaking, yet intriguing.

Checked that. Only "default" is there; no "url..." listing.

Looked there as well, and found only an INDEX.DAT file subdirectory, which
cannot be deleted.

Thanks

Hi Dev,

Maybe you can download one of those temporary programs like windows washer,
a shredder program, or another programs like that. I know that not all of
these programs clear the I.E. box, but then there other programs that do.
Good Luck.

Thank you, dev.)

Why can't the History (history) be deleted or did you mean the directory as
literal? Speaking of, what would be listed as: c"\ anyway?

Literal. INDEX.DAT is the subdirectory. "In use" is the reply when
deletion is attempted from RUN/cmd.

Log onto another user with Admin privileges or create a user with Admin
privileges then delete the file.

When you log back into your account, the index.dat file will be recreated.

There is also another index.dat file in:

%userprofile%\Local Settings\History\History.IE5

Good thought. I have administrator privileges, and no other user is
listed under LOG OFF|SWITCH USERS.
In Safe Mode I can log on as "administrator", but the Temporary Internet
Files subdirectory does not appear, under <my account>|Local Settings (nor
the Administrator account).

In normal mode, the subdirectories of INDEX.DAT can be deleted, but to no
effect on this issue.

Not here. That path shown as not valid (no History.IE5), though there are
subdirectories and history entries - Today, Last Week, etc.

This minor conundrum seems to be related to auto complete. Its entries
must reside somewhere. Perhaps one day the answer will materialize.^

That sounded promising Alan, but I find no method for clearing the drop
down in I.E.

Hi dev,

You need to delete the folder not just the contents. And also, remember
that you can not delete this folder from your own account while running it.

As for Auto-Complete and your theory: )

AutoComplete and Vcard and how they work
http://htmlgoodies.earthweb.com/autocomplete.html

Checkpoints to consider in the meantime:

1. Documents and Settings\<username>\App
Data\Microsoft\Credentials\<SID>\Credentials
2. Cookies
3. AutoComplete and Vcard and how they work
