Dell D630 no boot

When the start button is depressed, the laptop power ON light comes on and the HDD light stays ON for about 2 seconds; the DVD comes briefly ON, and then nothing. No Dell splash screen, no boot!

This laptop's motherboard was replaced by Dell under warranty (Nvidia chip issue). A week ago the laptop worked fine; this week no boot, no splash screen.

I tried the following:

1) Unplugged the AC adapter, took the battery out, and depressed the ON button for 60 seconds. Then connected the AC adapter and tried to turn the laptop ON. No boot, no splash screen.

2) Took out the RAM module and re-seated the RAM. Tried to boot. No splash screen.

3) Took out the HDD and checked it on another computer. No errors.

4) Tried with three different AC adapters. All adapters show ok and output 19.4 V

Can anyone suggest a course of action? Your thoughts and ideas are welcome!

Im sorry but it sounds like the motherboard again
you did all the right procedures
I would contact Dell again and open up another support ticket

only suggestion and this is a slim chance is to take out the mobo battery and jump the contacts together with a screwdriver to do a clear CMOS

I agree it being the board.

just dont let up with them
they dont make it easy but if you are annoyingly persistent they usually will oil the squeaky wheel LL

As a previous call center tech for dell, persistance is key with getting what you want but be aware that the techs you get on the phone are bound by policy and need manager approval to get anything beyond what the policy dictates.

at a certain point in conversation with rep politely ask to speak to their supervisor and if need be ask for the supervisor's supervisor

also if you call and the rep is a blithering idiot (sorry kit_fox I am sure you were not LOL) then just hang up and dial back even if you spent forever on hold
better off waiting on hold to get a rep that has a brain in them then trying to deal with an idiot or at least try to get the idiot to escalate to a supervisor

a tad bit bitter are we Russk1 LOL
I have felt that way being out on the question forums myself
I would give a detailed sourced out answer a paragraph or two long and somebody would give a condensed one sentence answer and get BA

Nah, not really. Just being a smartie pants. But I have seen some silly BA's.

Hope Ubrales gets his machine working again though.

if you have problems getting Dell to give you a replacement let me know
we have a few Dell D630s without HDs at work and maybe (just maybe) can get my hands on one cheap
no promises but I can try

Yes it is a Latitude D630! Let me know. As I mentioned, I have one D630 that works well. One option is to use the dead one for parts. The HDD is good, the battery is good; other parts I didn't test. The DVD and RAM are probably good too.

Not charging the battery could also be the DC connector for the system. Unfortunately in Dell's infinite wisdom they decided the DC connector should be soldered to the mobo for these systems so if that is the case there then its a mobo replacement anyway. Ubrales if I were you I would really consider getting an E series latitude when your warranty is up as they made some pretty good changes (DC connector is connected to mobo by a cable, system has a daughterboard with the most common connectors on it so if they go out the whole motherboard doesnt have to be replaced, etc.)

Do this for me though: Hold down the D key and then try to turn the system on, let it run for a few minutes and let me know if you hear any beeps. they should be in 3 groups something like 1-3-1 or 2-3-1 or such. Should give us an idea of what may have failed if you get any beeps.

kit_fox, thank you for your suggestion.

By depressing the 'D' key and starting the laptop, the screen came alive; it didn't before.

First, the LCD screen lit up, then changed to R, G, B, colors. It did this twice. Then went back to the plain lit screen. The DVD drive spun around for a few seconds.

Encouraged by this, I inserted the 'Re-installation' DVD and tried to start it after depressing the 'D' key. It didn't start. Re-tried without depressing the 'D' key. Still nothing.

That's where I am at.

Did you leave the system on for a few minutes after the color bar screens came up? those color bar tests run from the video card that is soldered to the motherboard then should switch over to full diagnostics and start to run them automatically. With this information If you got some video I almost wonder if the tech that replaced your motherboard before either didnt seat your LCD cable to the motherboard all the way or if your LCD cable may have gone out and not the motherboard. If you call Dell give them the results of the test I had you run. They may have you run it again but if they send a motherboard see if they will send you the LCD cable as well as it costs them virtually next to nothing.

Yes I followed your directions and after starting with the 'D' key depressed, I let the laptop under power (after the RGB screens) for more than 10 minutes.

I neglected to give you some pertinent information. My friend told me that he started the laptop and it ran fine 2 weeks ago. The motherboard was replaced by Dell back in April 2011 and since then my friend has used it on numerous occasions.

Last week, all he did was to package it back in the original carton, put it in his Land Rover and drive about 300 miles to my house.The packaging was the original carton and fillers that Dell used to ship the laptop via UPS, FedEx, etc.

After the RGB screens come on, should I leave the laptop ON for about 60 minutes? I can do this if it will help. Two weeks ago, this laptop ran fine.

no about 10-15 minutes would be fine to listen for the beeping. If that is a nogo you may either look through support.dell.com and find the service manual which should have a section on how to reseat/replace the LCD cable to the motherboard. I would try that if you dont get any beeps after about 15 minutes, then try to reseat all the system ram. if it still doesnt work then at that point I would try to get dell to replace the motherboard and possibly the LCD cable.
