Hi. I just installed a XP 2200+ onto a K7n2 board with a volcano 6 heatsink. It runs about 44-47°c. I get hangs and "serious errors" in my applications. What is the Friggen problem? Is that too hot for the Xp? Are there problems with my BIOS settings?

Let us know your heatsink and fan, your surrounding temperature, what thermal paste you are using and if you are overclocking.

My XP 2400, stock and also throoughBred, ran 46C if not higher on IDLE with average cooling, just got hotter with every overclock.

Remember Athlons run VERY hot, including the Tbreds, until you get up to Bartons.

EDIT: Oh, you said Volanco. THeres part of your problem. The volcanos are some of the worst performing heatsink'fan setups available. Their LOUD strong fans are the only reason they perform average...

actually the tbred B run very cool (duron 800 temps) most people who quote their temps here seem to be running in the 30's o low 40's C
but yes the xp2200 was a notoriously hot cpu

That's perhaps a little warm, if those are idle temps - but nowhere near high enough to cause the errors you're getting.. I wouldn't blame overheating until you were well up into the 50s.

What PSU does your computer have (make & W output).
What/How much RAM do you have?
What are your RAM timings set to?

sounds more likely to be RAM or power than overheating to me.... check the boards - there's people with XP chips running stably at much higher temps than yours...

An SK800(a) (make sure its properly installed!! I broke my chip before) is the best heatsink BY FAR. If you have mounting holes, then you can go higher to the SK800(U) or the SK900. Pair that with your volcano fan and youre set.

I have a Rhycom 450watt PSU and 2x 256 corsair ram.
This is the way it is set in the BIOS...
Cpu Fsb - 133mhz
DRAM clock - 166mhz
FSB/DRAM ratio - by speed
MEM timing - by speed
t ras - 7
t rcd - 3
t rp - 3
CAS latency - 2.5
FSB spread spectrum - .05%
DRAM VOLTAGE set to - 2.6v

Im not sure was all this is like t ras and spectrum....is there a place to read up on all this junk??
