I'm piecing together a monster system. However, my warehouse only has the 2.8GHz P4 w/ 800MHz FSB. I could get the 2.8 for about $150 less or wait a few days until the 3.0's come in. How well are these 800MHz FSB P4's overclocking? I'll be getting an Asus P4C800 and Corsair XMS RAM.

I don't know which is better for OC. But!!!! 3.2 P4 is due 21 May.

Well, I ordered the 2.8. I couldn't wait any longer. I can always upgrade later.

I was looking at the 2.8c myself. But may go with 2.4c. Less money besides I'm buying Prescott next year. Where did you buy 2.8c? I thought they where going on sale around 21 May?

Hey Black_Cat, couldn't stand to wait Eh, I know just what you mean, don't worry though the difference between those processors isn't really noticable, unless you're compiling video, then maybe 10min off a 4Hour compile, no big deal. I'll bet you can't wait, my hopes for you is that you get all good components, and everything goes flawlessly for you, have fun with your new toy. Ryan

Where'd you order from and how much did the C 2.8 run? I'm looking at getting the same thing and am dying to order.

Thanks but if everything goes flawlessly I might drop dead of a heart attack!

I got the 2.8 from my west coast warehouse. It ran me $320 after shipping. I do worry that they may have given me the wrong 2.8. For most people at the warehouse, my sales rep. included, English is not thier native language! If I get a box labled 533MHz FSB I won't be too pissed. I have a GA-8SG667 here collecting dust that I'll just slap that puppy into.

Since you own the new 2.8c with 800 Fsb. Why not buy the 8KNXP?

Reply to HardWareBoss

I'll take a guess that it's because he wants the P4C800 instead!

I considered the 8KNXP Ultra for the sole reason that it had built in SCSI 320. However, I reasoned that if I'm going to have SCSI 320 why not RAID too. Well, I looked everywhere for a stand-alone RAID card that is backward compatible with a 32 bit PCI slot but it apparently does not exist. So I opted for the Asus board with an Adaptec 2120-S SCSI RAID instead.

When it comes to brand new boards based on brand new chipsets I get a little nervous. I'm most comfortable with Asus. I've also been reading about these boards and it seems they all have some troubles. The Asus seemed to only have trouble with bus speeds < 200MHz. I'm sure the next BIOS will clear that up but it doesn't matter 'cause I'll be running it at 200MHz (hopefully more  ) anyway.

For me, ASUS has meant nothing but trouble lately as I can name 4 boards that all gave me problems.

My system: AMD Athlon XP 3000+ CPU / TwinMOS 1Gb DDR400 / Soltek 75FRN-RL /
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro / Antec True Power 550W / Maxtor 80Gb ATA-133 / Hercules GTXP SC /
Samsung DVD / Lite-On CDRW

I'm looking at all these boards too - same project. What board(maker) is the 8KNXA. Has anyone seen any across the board comparisons - I want to find the most full featured AND STABLE.

But Officer, I wasn't speeding - I was qualifying ...
If I'm a Newbie - do I get a discount ...? (How does one get promoted?)

I too am putting together a new machine and should be picking it up in a couple days! I desided on the 2.4 for price reasons. parden the Canadian currency but here is how i desided on the 2.4

2.4B @ $235 = $97.92 a Ghz or 0.97c a Mhz
2.53 @ $283 = 111.85 a Ghz or 1.12c a Mhz
2.66 @ $319 = 119.92 a Ghz or 1.20c a Mhz
2.8 @ $459 = 163.93 a Ghz or 1.64c a Mhz
3.06 @ $555 = 181.37 a Ghz or 1.81c a Mhz

I took this and thought hmm,

5% speed increase from 2.4 to 2.53 @ a 14% cost/per/Ghz
5% speed increase from 2.53 to 2.66 @ a 12% cost/per/Ghz
5% speed increase from 2.66 to 2.8 @ a 37% cost/per/Ghz
5% speed increase from 2.8 to 3.0 @ a 10% cost/per/Ghz

Of coarse for the 3.06 its a bit differant with the hyperthreding... but then that ment a new MoBo that costs a boat load more too. but that s a whole differant thing. besides were in a whole new price range now... and its out of reach for most people anyhow.

So before i get lost in all those numbers. this is what i ended up with. I thought that a comparison like this might be a little handy... yes there are MANY other factors here, this is just one.

Board: ASUS P4S8X (SIS 648, AGP8X, USB2.0, 533FSB,
Serial ATA, Firewire, S/L)
RAM: 2 x 512M of DDR333, cl of 2.5
CPU: INTEL Pentium4 2.4B
Vid: ATI 9500 Pro (Sapphire)
HD: WD 80G Hard (8M Buffer)
DVD: LG 16X DVD ROM
CD RW YAMAHA F1... already have that though.
CASE: MECCA (Mid Tower P4 Enlight 420W Powersupply, 2 Front USB,Audio,Case Fan)

If any one has any input on this system, please let me know what you think before i buy it.
Thanks

dah, has any body seen my paints?

Nice calculations going on there. You are one educated consumer!

My advice: Don't go cheap on your ram.

Look ar the FAQ's on the left side of the screen. It will tell you.

If it ain't broke, take it apart & see why not!

8KNXP is made by Gigabyte. From what I've seen they all have small problems. But the new BIOS will take care of that. What are you using your computer for?
