Need some advice on new laptop

Forum Laptops & Notebooks : General Discussion Need some advice on new laptop

Hi all :)

I'm in the great position that my company has offered me a new laptop. I don't know much about the current trend in hardware though, so I hoped you guys could help me.

1_What is your budget?
~2k USD - Prolly a little less, as I'm from Denmark, and I'd imagine things are more expensive here :)

2_What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
15" or so

3_What screen resolution do you want?
I'd luuuv 1920xwhatever, but less will do :)

4_Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Not sure I understand the question? But I already got a very nice desktop, so I'll mainly use the laptop at my school.

5_How much battery life do you need?
Not much. 1-2 hours. More is better ofc..

6_Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
CS 1.5, 800x600 - For the lolz at school :P I'd hate a onboard graphics card though.

7_What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo / Video editing, watching movies, Etc.)
Programming. And lots of it. I need a lot of CPU power and RAM for my needs, as I often run 2-3 IDEs, different servers, various documents etc. etc. at the same time. My desktop is a i7 920 with 6gb of RAM, and I really enjoy programming on it.

8_How much storage (H.D.D Capacity) do you need?
Very little. My current laptop has 30gb, and that's plenty for my needs. I guess ~50gb.

9_If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post the links to them.
I'd like to buy from www.dell.com (or rather www.dell.dk)

10_How long do you want to keep your laptop?
2 years+

11_What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
Bluray would be a bonus, but not needed.

12_Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
I've only heard good things about dell. I'd really prefer not to get a mac, because of all the potential compatibilty issues (even with windows 7 on it)

13_What country do you live in?
Denmark

14_Please tell us any additional information if needed.
I'd love to know which kind of CPUs I should go for? Is the i7 a lot better than the i5? What about the i7 EE?
-- Also, do you guys think I should wait 2-3 months? I could live with my old laptop till then, and I was wondering if SSDs are likely to go enough down in price / up in capacity to be worth it?
I don't need any custom software or O/S as my school provides these for me.

I'd really appreciate any feedback! You don't have to put together a full-blown custom system for me, a few pointer on key areas and what to (not) go for will do :)
I'm a software engineer, and I'm only familiarizing myself with hardware whenever I need a new system, so I know about the concepts, just not the latest specs.

Hello and welcome to the forums :)
This Lenvo model is a great choice with a decent price:

As for dell,i could have recommended AW M15x but its a gaming laptop and since you don't game its a waste to pay for a gaming VGA.
Also i could have recommended Dell Studio 15 but that has an i5 CPU and not i7.
You can go for a Dell Studio 17 which has i7 but its 17",so if you want a 15" laptop with an i7 then that Lenovo model looks a good choice.

Reply to Maziar

That Lenovo looks very smooth! I'll have a look at it - Thanks :)

I highly recommend the one Maziar desribed...I have experience with it and it's GREAT for the price. You get something close to Apple build with a great keyboard and a nice multitouch trackpad. Although not as streamlined as the macbook, its still great! The lenovo also has decent battery life for an i7 laptop.
