New to all this, I received a used amd 2100xp from a friend and there's thermal paste/tap on the pin side of the cpu over the components in the center. Should this be here? Is there any harm in leaving it or removing it? Thanks in advance. Also is there a way to tell if it's A or B? Does this chip overclock?

give us the exact serial # you see on the chip and we can tell you if it's an A or B. It's not good to have paste on the pin side, since some pastes are *slightly* capacitive, though I'm not sure what that would do to your machine. I wouldn't recomend it.

The only place you should have thermal paste on an AMD CPU is on the small metal square in the center where the heatsink rests.

Get a soft brush (a small paint brush will do) dip it in rubbing alcohol and clean off all the excess, being careful not to bend any pins.

Polish the metal heat island with a bit of paper towel, apply new paste according to these instructions:
