I can't boot my xp dell notebook. At first, the boot would get to a place where something like "successfully loaded PBR 1" and then hang. I removed the boot drive and put an old boot drive in the system and found that the file system was still intact of the drive that failed to boot. So I then went to the recovery disk and ran fixmbr. The boot now hangs before the "PBR 1" message. So I went back and verified that the file system is still intact. (One of the warnings of FIXMBR is that you could lose partition info and thus data. It doesn't appear that this has happened yet.
So what should I do to make this thing bootable. There is only on partition on the drive. Did the FIXMBR make that partition active? Is that the problem? Or is it something else
I forgot to mention that my anti-virus ap detected the hiloti.n trojan when I would opened a Word file. AVG supposedly isolated the trojan and and requested I restart. I just shut the computer down and then started it today and that is when the problem began.
