ok heres the dealy

i have an opportunity to buy a AXP 1700+ for 90bucks new. OR a 2000+ for 100 bucks. now, he (the computer store guy.. we all know how KNOWLEDGEABLE they are .. yes im being totally fuking sarcastic) says that the 1700+ is the "reeely fast overclockalble one man", and i know that most often 2000+ are TbredA

so.. wat would you do? go with a 2000+ for that little bit more so you garunteed a 2000+, or go with a 1700+ in case its a TbredB?

i will base my purchase on your guyses advice. unless, you say really stupid stuff, as you sometimes do =D

I'd check the 1700 and see if it's a B chip... if not I'd go with the 2000.

You don't need to open the package, you can see the stepping codes on the sticker on the cpu ceramics quite well just by looking through the back of the package.

You'll know if they're Palominos as they'll have square cores Tbreds have rectangular ones that look more like the old Thunderbird cores.

As far as A & B types go you'll have to check out the serial codes but all Tbreds are pretty good overclockers. Remember a 2000+ Palo is at the end of its line, already running hot and won't overclock much more without sophisticated cooling.

A 2000+ Tbred is at the start of its line and will easily overclock to level of a 2400+ with fairly modest cooling. I'd go for the 2000+ if its a Tbred if not the 1700+ as it sounds to be definitely so.

ummm... I think You wanted 'New Post' not 'Reply'....
but in answer to your question, I haven't heard of a mobile K6-2... Why would you want such an old chip anyway? I don't think it exists. and a desktop one would suck juice up like some deranged silicon vampire, so I wouldn't get a Laptop with a Desktop K6-2 in it...

I could be wrong though...

Why not just buy a 1700+ from a website that guarantees it's a T-bred 'B'? It'll probably be cheaper too. I've never actually seen a retail package up close before, but I'm suprised that there would be no stepping information, or week of manufacture info or something visible on the box....

ah, canadian$... Thought it seemed a bit pricey.. Best I could suggest is get the 1700+... as it's probably a more popular chip, they've probably had to replace their stock more often, so it's more likely to be a T-bred B. I don't suppose the shop guy can tell you when they got them in?

If they're both Palaminos, then you may as well get the 1700, as it will probably oc to the level of the 2000+, whereas the 2000+ probably has very little headroom (I have a pally 2000+ at home - an extra 50Mhz is a good result from it)

This is all guesswork though really.... So good luck bud.
