Question: Sanding a playfield touch up!

Howdy,

I have just finished MEing my Grand Prix. I am going to do a bit of
touch up on the playfield before waxing. The question concerns sanding
the touched up area. Has anyone tried using ME for sanding down a
touch up?

ME does sand paint, anyone using ME has learned that lesosn maybe the
hard way. I was thinking that I could use a small piece of ME between
two fingers. This would provide a very controlled means of sanding.
However, would the alchohol be too rough on the new Acrylic? I have
never tried touching up a playfield before so I am naturally nervous
about the experience and in particular very nervous about using a
sanding block which might effect an area greater than I desire.

All opinions and guidance are welcome! Have a great 4th everyone!

how about carefully surrounding the areas you touched with mylar or
masking tape so that you don't worry about sanding it? Makr sure it
isn't going to lift off any paint of course when you pull it off
(masking tape probably better). ME is equvalent to very very fine
sandpaper so if you have really thick touchup it might take to long to
work thru it by how much you need to, I'd think you may need something
rougher to start with depending on thickness.

But its an unknown grit. Best is to do like Mark sez, mask off areas to
protect and then block sand with 600 wet. If your touchups are acrylic
then sand dry or it will dissolve. I use a small aluminum block for tiny
areas, its 1/2" x 3/4" x 2" long.

No- that would be like using a dish towel to strip paint off your house...
Really- wrong tool for the job.

Depending on the type of paint you use, you'll either need something very
abrasive or not too abrasive- depends on the hardness of the paint- a water
based acrylic will be very soft, and an enamel (like Testor's model paints)
will dry extremely hard after a few days.

I'm not the best artist, so I avoid this stuff whenever possible, but when I
do use paint, the type I use depends on if I'm going to clearcoat the field
or cover the spot with protective mylar, or leave the paint "exposed" to the
ball, elements, etc.

If clearcoating or mylaring, I'll use water based acrylics which are so very
much easy to use and forgiving. The cc or mylar will protect the paint.
If leaving exposed, I'll use Testor's enamels (or similar enamel- something
that dries HARD).

Soft acrylics can be sanded down flush with the rest of the playfield with
some very fine sandpaper- something like 200 grit or higher. Get it flush
with the playfield and then cover with mylar or clearcoat.

Hard (dried a few days) enamels can be sanded down with wet-or-dry paper
(used wet)- something like 400 or 800 grit is good. After that, polish with
Novus #2 or Diamond Bright, then wax over the top a few coats with Kit
Carnauba for extra hard protection.

"That's what I do!"

More advice- do any "experimenting" on a test area (hidden spot on the
playfield) or a test "parts" playfield to make sure there are no reactions,
etc.

Good luck!

Use the 3M "blue" tape- available in several "stickynesses"- much better
than taking the risk with regular masking tape. The blue tape is expensive,
but may save damage.
