How do i find a file that disappeared from a drive on the domain server?

I was working at a workstation and saved a bunch of data to a folder in a drive on the server. Today when I went to retrieve the folder and information it was gone. I have used the search and put the file name in but it wasn't found.

Why did my file just disappear and can I retrieve it?

If the file was backed up you can just restore it from backup.
