I have an Epox 8KHA+ (KT266A chipset), revision 2.0 running XP1700+
I plan to upgrade to Barton 2500+ an overclock as much as I can, because I don't want to change my mobo right now. Considerations:
1.- I know it won't run at 333FSB. I will push FSB as far as I can using 333Mhz memory (CL2.5 512Mb Corsair). My idea is to increase FSB to 150 at least.
2.- I will also unlock the multiplier so I can rise it to compensate lower FSB. I know performance won't be the same due to lower FSB, but it's ok.
3.- I expect significant overclockability of the CPU
Now, I'm worried if my mobo will support it. I wrote an email to Epox:
"I have and Epox 8KHA+ rev 2.0 based on KT266A. I would like to know if I
can run Barton 2500+.
IMPORTANT: I don't mind runnig at 266 FSB instead of 333 FSB, I know
performance will be significantly lower, I just want to be sure it will
run. Also, will BIOS recognize it?
You'll notice that the page specifically states that 333FSB chips are not supported. An XP2500+ will be supported, but only the 266FSB part, not the 333FSB part.
I think there are 2 Barton XP2500+, so the response is technically correct. I'm having a lot of difficulty finding proof, but it certainly appears that Barton XP2500+ w. 512Kb cache is available on both parts 266/333.
Given that I'd just buy the correct part in the first place.

I'm not really an expert but, if mobo supports Barton 2500+ at 266, it should support 333 version BUT running at lower frecuency due to unsupported 333 FSB.
I mean, if the only reason they say is not supported is FSB, then I don't mind. I can buy 333 version, unlock it and raise the multiplier. I know Epox can't tell me this, maybe that's the reason of their "technically response". But that opens a BIG window to update my system (and probably a lot of people are in a similar situation)

I think I'm leading you down the wrong path - on further examination the path that lead to 266FSB XP2500s was false, 266 XP2600+s yes, but 2500 no.... Apologies if I have confused anything.

Basically its like this. AMD went from XP2400 to XP2600, the 2500 didn't come out till barton. What's gonna happen is, unless you can change the multiplier, you'll be stuck running at around 1900+ with 266 fsb.
Sorry to be a disappointer - but there's really no way around except to max out your mobo's fsb (I don't recommend, not that great for the mobo) or you increase the multiplier to 12.5.
i have a AK77-333, KT333 chipset. it is basically a KT266A with official support for DDR333, and based on what manufacturer you get, 333FSB. unfortunatly, i chose Aopen, and they DIDNT chose to support the 333fsb.
the Epox KT333 board does support the 333FSB. in fact it can hit 200 easily if the cpu allows.
on the box of mine tho, it says "Max FSB of 248!! for extreme overclockers!!!" but the problem is with this board above 155 is undoable because theres no 1/5 PCI divider. above 151 for me the PCI bus is overclocked too at much 39mhz because the Award bios only supports the 1/3 or 1/4 divider. but the motherbaord is COMPLETELY capable of it because the Epox board DOES support it and is the exact same north and southbridge
im currently searching for a custom bios for this mobo, kinda like the Widow-X bios or watever its called for the K7S5A. this board isnt even close to teh popularity of the K7S5A so i doubt ill find one
if you can find a bios for your motherboard that allows the 1/5 PCI/FSB divider then you will be able to use the barton at 333FSB. the KT266A that you have is basically identicle to the KT333 chipset.

No. If you get the impossible bios it would be fine. If your bios doesn't recognize the chip, it probably wont boot. If it does boot the base speed would be 1.37 gigs.Sure it has the extra line 2 cache but at a base speed lower than your 1700. What's the point. Especially when for $10 less you can get a 2400 that your board will run. It comes with the multipliers unlocked so its great to play with all the combos. I had mine on an A7V333 board,doig 13 X 166 no sweat. Who gives a rats arse about a little extra cache when you can get so much more speed.
My idea was to get a Barton, unlock it, and get the maximum combination raising as much the FSB (around 150Mhz for my KT266A, 166 for most KT333 mobos)
Afaik, Barton can be unlocked like Tbred, isn't it?

Yes but you are starting at 1.37 gigs rather than 2 gigs To great a deficit to overcome period

XP 2600+ runs at 2133 = 16 x 133Mhz (Epox clearly says 8KHA+ supports it)
XP 2500+ runs at 1833 = 11 x 166Mhz
So that means the mobo is able to set x16 multiplier (maximum). If I combine with the right multiplier with supported FSB, I can get something similar, at least as far as total Mhz. Also can go further if things go right:
- Combining supported values; XP 2500+ runing at 1866 = 14 x 133Mhz
- Raising FSB (realistic); XP 2500+ running at 1875 = 12,5 x 150Mhz (this one is better)
- Maximum with 133FSB; XP ????+ running at 2133 = 16 x 133Mhz
- Maximum with 150FSB; XP ????+ running at 2400 = 16 x 150Mhz (this one is the best, but probably not too easy to get, low odds)
What do you think about it? Am I crazy? Any comment/opinion/idea will be really appreciated. Thanks!

First off you have to find a bios for your board otherwise it wont recognize the chip,and your system wont post. Second, how can you expect to increase the multiplier that much (to beat a chip that starts with a 15X multiplier)with a cpu that starts at 11. If you can run the 2500 to 13 X 150 I would be glad for you. With that kind of cooling the 2400 could do at least 17 X 150 =2.5 gigs.
I have heard that the 2500 is a good ocer but that was using higher fsb and multiplier not lower fsb. First things first. You have to find a bios that supports the xp2500.
