Without laptop hard drive, can i connect to the desktop HD from laptop

Is my laptop(compaq presario c700) work if i remove its hard drive and connect to desktop hard drive through 'usb to hard drive adapter'?
If it works, can i use all the applications(softwares) of my desktop hard drive without problems?
please reply me soon, waiting for your help.

Chances are that you can't boot from a USB harddrive with your laptop. Why do you want to do this anyway?
