What is your best memory of July 4'th ? Mine (over the years) was
setting off fire works, picnics, 1976 in NYC- (tall ships), decorating
my bike, hanging out on hot humid July 4'ths playing pinball in at
Edison Lanes (112 lanes) bowling alley just to keep cool in air
conditioning, the board walk in Seaside Park, Palisades Park amusement
park, killer sun burns, wearing my "Yank My Doodle, Its A Dandy"
t-shirt, pool hopping after midnight, to name a few.
Happy July 4'th to all, and remember all the soldiers in the war
against terror.

We used to go watch the fireworks displays at Spartan Stadium in San
Jose when I was a kid. We'd bundle up in blankets in the back of Dad's
pickup truck, and it seemed as if the fireworks were going off right
above us. This was after a day of BBQ and family fun at my
Grandmother's house. Bicentennial year was best...I remember Southern
Pacific had an engine they painted in the Spirit of '76 colors...was
used on the SF-SJ commuter line. Everyone wanted to ride with that
engine. Plus, it seemed that every 7-11 you went in to had a couple
great pins to play.

Lake Tahoe, 1989. I was working swing shift at Harvey's Resort Hotel &
Casino and the new 18-story hotel tower was not yet complete. We had
been storing unused slot machines on the unfinished 18th floor. I called
Security about 8PM and asked to check out the keys to the 18th floor,
told them I needed a reel mech to get a floor game fixed. Even though
they scoffed, they had to give me the keys, I was the Slot Repair Shift
Supervisor. I go up to 18 with several of my techs and my girlfriend
(now wife) and we watch a $250,000 fireworks show shooting from a barge
anchored out in Lake Tahoe. We're watching completely unobstructed from
a dark hotel floor through floor-to-ceiling glass. Absolutely fantastic!
Most of the high shells are going off at eye level less than half a mile
away. Every shell lights up the hundreds (really!) of small boats that
always gather at the south shore for the fireworks every year. The
really high shells go up above us and light up the whole floor we're on.
Quite magical!

Now, there's a restaurant there and reservations for the 4th are booked
years in advance. I think it was probably better when it was dark, bare,
and free!

It's funny how the Jersey shore brings back such great memories of our
past.

I live about 15 minutes from Belmar and spent MANY days and nights in
Seaside Heights.

The "Big Lemon" (chees steak and sausage stand) in the middle of the
boardwalk was a favorite meeting place for friends coming down.

And how about the "Sawmill Cafe" cheap pizza and generic soda....but
great times none the less.

Anyone remember "Rainbow Rapids" ??
I used to spend hours by the pool area because every 5 minutes or so, a
pretty girl would lose her top going down the slides!!

I just realized when I first became a perve......10 years old.

Happy 4th !!!

Happy 4th to all.

My friend Steve and I took our motorcycles down the Jersey
shore, not knowing quite where we were going to end up.
It's 1976, so our crusing theme song of choice is "Born to Run".

So we end up in Asbury Park around sunset. We're cruising
around and decide to stop for one reason or another. We parked
in front of a place called Madam Marie's. We look at each other,
realizing that this is familiar for some reason. Then we remember
the Springsteen song lyric:

"The cops finally busted Madam Marie, for telling fortunes better
than they do". Oh yeah, a Springsteen song. What was the name of
it? Sandy. But that's not the complete title, which we remembered
simultaneously: "4th of July, Asbury Park"! As the coincidence
sank in, the first fireworks of the night went off. Needless to say,
we spent the next few hours "bangin' those pleasure machines".

Mine's just starting. I'll let you know tomorrow. Hope everyone has a safe
and happy 4th of July. Drive carefully, bore the cops, and there will be
less of them next year. My apologies to the English readres here. LTG :)

We just got back from Seaside...had not been there in 22 years! Water
was great but a little cool. The hole we stayed in was $200 a night.
Boardwalk was nice. Could not find a nice momento to buy so I'll frame
my parking ticket instead. Oops...almost forgot about the seagull
pooping on my arm. Got a nice tan anyway. Oh well, even with the
traffic there's no place quite like the Jersey shore.
