laptop displays for outdoors

It's time to get a new laptop but this time I want something I can use outdoors in normal sunlight. The VGA active matrix screens I have seen on other people's machines are all backlit so they are unreadable in sunlight. I would prefer to get a Dell, Sony or Toshiba but the stores that typically sell them won't even let their employees take one outside for a demo. Cost is not the prime consideration if I can get something that works well. Does anyone have experience with this?
