My home network has 2 computers, both Win98se, running through a DSL/Cable router (D-Link DI-704). Currently I only use the router to share MSN dial-up internet access by hooking my external courier to the serial port on the router. Everything is good and I can get online, but for some reason, usually after I leave my computer alone for awhile, I can't get online. The modem is still connected and the other computer can get online fine, yet I seem to have no internet access at all. The only way to solve this is to disconnect and reconnect the modem. I don't understand why my computer all of a sudden can't get online, even though the modem never disconnect and the other computer can access it fine. Is this some kind of timeout deal? DNS issue? MSN issue? PLEASE HELP! Thanks.
Yeah. When I first connect to the internet, both computer can access the internet fine. Typically I get disconnected when I go to bed or I'm at work. I don't understand why I can't get online sometimes even if the modem is connected and the other computer is online. I have to hang up and redial for it to work again. Its like it loses the path to the router. dunno.
OK, so you can ping the router. Are you able to release and renew your IP address from the DHCP server? If you do that, does the connection then work? How about rebooting the router? Does that fixt he problem?
What about other protocols? When the problem occurs are you able to telnet to anything? I know there are some libraries which allow telnet access. Also, can you FTP to any ftp server? Using another ftp client, such as WS_FTP?
Inquiring minds want to know...
It's always the one thing you never suspected.
Actually I'm not using DHCP right now. When I tried to use it, I couldn't access the router and it didn't seem to be assigning IPs correctly. Anyways, I can't release/reknew because of it. Perhaps I'll try to get DHCP working up again. Neither FTP nor Telnet work. It'd be the same as if the modem wasn't on period. I've tried everything I can think of, which is why I'm here and why I appreciate your continuing help! This only happens when I'm not using the computer and it sits idle for a bit, so all I can think of is that it's a timeout issue somewhere or another. However since the other computer doesn't discconect, it has to be an issue with my computer specifically. I've check the network settings and they are exactly the same on each as far as DNS/gateway/protocols/etc. The internet sharing is through MSN, do they have specific DNS entires or something, anything that could screw up sharing? thanks!!!
