IBM to build Cell supercomputer for DOE

IBM will construct a new supercomputer for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The system will combine Cell and Opteron processors and deliver more than twice the combined performance of the DOE's BlueGene/L and ASC Purple systems, which are currently ranked #1 and #3 on the Top 500 supercomputer list. I think this is the sort of news--IF it can be recurring-- that can bring AMD back into the game and put them back on a growth trend. Some solid gains in the server segment would really help them a lot--especially if A-64 is a viable product...

But the Athlon XP needs to go away soon...Their high-end CPUs aren't worth the money, and they don't <i>make</i> any money off the low-end and mainstream CPUs.

Too bad the NEC Earth Simulator (which is in Japan) is capable of 40.9 tflops (read, tera). What the Inquirer fails to note (which it does often) is that it's the fastest parallel supercomputer. Most traditional supercomputers are vector computers.
