Hello Everyone. My fan went bad a few on me a few days ago, as a result my
cpu burned, and somehow my mobo got damaged too....A huge domino effect.

Well I have just finished ghosting my system just incase. I have replaced
the mobo, cpu, heatsink & fan. But I know xp is not going to like this.. Hal
or something. In the past when I did a repair -- all my desktop items(which
had important files) were gone and so was my user account with all my
documents... I manage to get most of it back using recovery software to get
it back off harddrive..

I want to avoid any problems... so question is :
Which version do I use to do the repair? I have slipstreamed sp1 and sp2.
However two months ago, I went back to sp1 and then upgraded to sp2 because a
particular program would not run properly in systems with a clean sp2
installtion.

Man, Im making this long arent I? hehehe sorry.

I once read you could change something with hal and then you wouldnt have to
do the repair ... as soon as xp would start back up it would just accept the
new mobo without the usually problems most encounter now when hardware
changes enough to cause this situation..

sorry again.. I always enjoyed reading stuff in the community..learned alot.

That was a good article you posted and has very good information. However it
doesnt answer the question at hand.

I used xp sp1 cd to install, it over time upgraded to sp2. I have both sp1
and sp2 slipstreamed cds. Which xp cd should I used to do this repair due to
the major hardware change that has taken place?

If the current installation is SP2, you should use the slipstreamed SP
disk.

Thanks Malke. Im glad to know I made the right choice(Im back here posting
cus I hit a snagzola)

Well I used the slipstreamed sp2 disk, because I figured it just made more
sense to use that one, plus I got a backup image of the drive just in case.

Well after starting the repair process...copied all system files...reboot
etc etc

After the reboot and xp is installing drivers configuring etc.. I got blue
screen with the following:

Driver_unloaded_without_canceling_operation

vdiskbus.sys

0x---CE, 0xF79900DC, 0x---0, 0xF79900DC

---- = 0s

vdisk makes me think if virtual disk, which I did have alcohol 120 installed
in that xp installation..but??? Hopefully someone here knows answer >>>Time
to Google(heheh)

Thank you very much so far. The Challange continues...

Alcohol 120 is a known problem with SP2 and needs to be completely
uninstalled before you apply SP2. I guess you still have some of it
left. I think I'd use your backup image and go back and remove
absolutely all traces of Alcohol 120 before trying SP2. Here are some
