Dell Dimension 4100, 1 gig PIII, 512 meg RAM, Win2k Pro, 80 gig hard disk,
USB 1.0.

I am considering buying a scanner and I will be an infrequent user. I
understand newer peripherals come with USB 2.0; would there be any
significant issues other than slow transfer rates between a scanner using
USB 2.0 and my system's 1.0?

AIUI 2.0 is backwards compatible so there shouldn't be any significant
issues.

FWIW, I plugged a USB 2.0 flashdrive/pendrive into a very old laptop the
other day and it worked fine although Win2K did protest that I'd plugged a
high speed data transfer device into a non-high speed port.

Didn't hinder or impede the operation though.

A scanner SHOULD be backwards compatible to USB 1.1, which is what I suspect is
built-into the Dimension 4100 motherboard. A scanner is not such a screamer
that it would be greatly impaired by USB 1.1. You always have the option to add
a USB 2.0 card into your system... Ben Myers
