Looking for opinions (yeah I said that word) -- FT, T2, JM..

Looking to add 1 - 2 more pins to my tiny collection of MB, NGG -- WE LOVE
THESE 2!

I have played all of these and like them all just want to hear what the rgp
brethren has to say (cannot add more than 2).

Previously owned

STTNG - loved it and wished we had kept it
RS - loved it
TOM - beautiful game but did not grab us
TAF - ehhh, good game but not a keeper
DM - have it no and its on the way out .. again good game but not a keeper
Batman - yuck
JP - loved it and wished we had kept it

Played extensively at my sister's house - WH20 - good game (hate the sound),
Getaway -- a blast to play

Basically I just want to be sure I have a decent "variety" of choices for me
and the kids. The FT is a 99.99% done deal unless something else happens as
its a fun game and I think my kids will have an absolute blast with it (they
are 5(almost 6) and 3). I should mention that we do have people over
regularly for parties and such so games that are fun and easy to play for
everyone is cool but not the main decision making factor.

Thanks for your input (and no I am not looking for you guys to make my
decision for me).

I am actually a fan of my LW3. (John, thanks for the roms....Jim Knight
thanks for the Rottendog Board) I know a lot of people slam Data East
games, but I have a LW3, DE Simpsons, and now a WMS WH20, and it seems
most of my guests like the LW3. I would guess it is because the movie
was so popular, and because most of the female guests like Mel on the
translite. All of my friends are Simpsons fans, and when they see the
pinball, they immediately go for that. I am starting to really become
attached to the WH20 (Simpsons is still my favorite overall though). My
buddy bought the FT from D Peeples and I am really glad he sold it to
him! It is somewhat shallow as far as the rules, but it just keeps me
coming back for more. I like the fishing theme, the sounds are
repetitive yet you cannot get them out of your head. I don't know how
many times I hear myself saying...."Gone fishing, Leave a message" I
played the FT all thorugh college, it was sitting between Shaq, Rescue
911, and CFTBL. There is something about FT's overall theme that keeps
me playing.....

Oh, there's a lot to shoot at, but just not a lot of reason to. Once
you're nailing the captive ball for 100M (or 200M or 300M) a whack,
what's the point?

> Also I don't want to sound all liberal, but can we please stop using

You know, I tried to think of another suitable term, but just can't
find a word that carries the same oomph. "Easy" doesn't work - it's
not a verb. And really, when you're scoring billions off one
multiball, you need some oomph. :) RGP linguists, break out the
thesaruses and help us out here..

> I must strongly disagree. HS2 might have an open middle but there's
> NOTHING TO SHOOT AT. Fish tales has many similar shots, the left and

Well, it's a matter of opinion. FT gives you 6 shots: 2 orbits,
lockup, 2 boatramps and the captive ball. HS2 gives you 6 as well: 2
orbits, supercharger, center target bank, 'to upper pop area' and
tunnel (I'm not counting the upper flipper shot). The center bank is
important, and you can also rebound shots off it to get the targets to
the right of the ramp. The 'to upper pop area' isn't really what some
would call a shot, but it is important to get the ball up there so the
popbumper can get those targets for you.

HS2 is a target shooter's game, FT is a ramp shooter's game. I do like
the boat better than targets, but that doesn't mean FT's playfield
isn't cramped.

> anything, it's got shots. A much more satisfying layout to me with many
> more satisfying shots that actually mean something. HS2 to me just

And there ya go.. you like the shots better. I do like slinging the
ball back and forth around the boat as well, but the rules are still
imbalanced too badly in FT.

Just my opinion, but if you are looking at getting a new Pin, why not
get a Shadow, it plays great, has deep rules, guest love it, i think it
would be hard to get tired of it. Johnny mnemonic, i think is a cool
game, the only thing that worries me about that game is the hand,
(maintenance) however i am buying one because i think its cool. Get
what you want, not what other people want.

As a game, it's better than T2. Better layout, better rules, just more
fun.

Theme - T2 is a no contest winner.

FTs & HS 2 are both high on my want list ( even a decent priced faded
one ) I have JM & its a OK games but learning to work that moving glove
has proved slow for me.
ONLY YOU will know which to get & I had a LW3 & didnt think it was bad
either,, If you like the Wide-Bodys, Go for the ST:TNG.

Pin-Del,
Who stays away from WBs so I have more room =)

Getaway and FT

T2 is a great game, but I don't think it's HS2 or FT great.

I'm not a big JM fan, but that could very well be because I haven't
played it much. Perhaps it's a player like BSD that you just have to
look past the theme and play a bunch to get...

I've owned HS2 and FT. Actually, I *still* own the HS2, and wish I still
owned the FT.

I rank them

FT - great layout, rules, sound - a happy happy game that will put a
smile on your face.
T2 - Perfect layout, theme, and sound - rules suffer a bit with the
unbalanced Super Jackpot. Still it's a great game.
JM - nice flow, terrible theme, horrible video mode
HS2 - loud, obnoxious, cramped, shallow ruleset. Bad sound and video
mode. Not my cup of tea.

FT does nothing for me

I agree ...get the ST:TNG back as fast as you can..great game

and HS2 Rocks it is faster than fast and all the kids like it plus
the adults that play our pins, light flashing, sirens, it has it all,
who does not like to out run the COPS!!!!! Some people find it too
FAST!!!

JM I am not a big fan of this pin

I had STTNG, WH20, Getaway, and FT, needed room and the FT was the one that
my wife and I decided on would go. Its a cute game, but not alot of shots
and gets boring fast. Of the 4 my party guests disliked FT the most and
like Getaway the best. The people that dont play pinball alot seem to
gravitate toward the Getaway and WH20, while the people that play games
alot, and Scifi people just love STTNG.

Course I also have a select few that will play my slot machine for hours on
end and not touch the pins much at all.

You crack me up, man. Fishtales has "great rules and layout" while HS2
is "cramped" with a "shallow" ruleset??

ROFL!

Hello, fishtales' super jackpot is one of the most infamously-rapeable
points bonanzas in all of pinball. There are *no* rules here except
start multiball over and over and over. Period. As for a cramped
playfield, how you can say Getaway is cramped (with the nice open
middle) and Fishtales is "great" (with the big honkin boat ramp
blocking everything but the orbits and lock) .. umm.. right :) C'mon,
read what you write BEFORE you post it!

You forgot the comma. Shoot the right orbit, hit the captive ball to
advance the boat. I like that feature alot. Shoot the alternating boat
ramps. Get the monster fish. I think there's a good bit going on there.
Also I don't want to sound all liberal, but can we please stop using
the word "rape?" How about easy? It works just as well without the
unpleasant conotation.

I must strongly disagree. HS2 might have an open middle but there's
NOTHING TO SHOOT AT. Fish tales has many similar shots, the left and
right "fan" shots, and the "big honkin boat" happens to have THREE cool
shots, the left and right ramps and the captive ball. It's not blocking
anything, it's got shots. A much more satisfying layout to me with many
more satisfying shots that actually mean something. HS2 to me just
doesn't have enough to shoot at and is all orbits.

I think the guests are right in this case, Levi :)

Of course, you didn't like White Water either

Of course, you told me I'd like my T2 once I was done fixing it up, and
you were right

I guess 1/3 ain't bad :)

LOL!! I hear ya. We will most definitely have STTNG back in the fold one
day but will take this opportunity to explore other pins for now. My space
limits me to 4 (maybe 5) pins total so therefore I have to be selective with
what I get.

Thanks for all the feedback folks!! Funny how everyone has FT first but
after that its all different (probably why I have pretty much already done
the deal on FT as well LOL)

LW3 ain't that bad. If you're considering T2, you might as well look at
a very similar machine that will cost a few hundred less :)

And no, I wouldn't trade my T2 for a LW3 + a few hundreds...

Yep, FT is one of the best looking games and the one I had was in gorgeous
condition but I had to let it go. I just got bored with it :( Bonus points
and multiplier are a waste of time - unbalanced scoring, ugh. Interestingly
my 6 year old son, who I thought would like this game, hardly ever played it
and didn't like it at all. His games of preference are The Shadow and
Getaway.

Perhaps someone should set up a museum of all the bad pins somewhere.

Who'd visit it?

Although, a bad pin is better than no pin.

But seriously, LW3 ain't that bad.

I have played JM only once and found that the video mode and glove thing
really slowed the game down.

The Shadow is a great game though there are more things to go wrong
mechanically. Once tuned up, it is a great playing game. Well balanced
scoring and fast...

Although it's one I don't own, FT would get my pick
out of that bunch. T2 and HSII are fun for but a short
while. FT is like most other Mark Ritchie games, and
those all seem to have a little more staying power.

(GUESTS like it, too!) :D
