Ok, I need a PC setup for less than $400. The monitor I found one for $100 and the rest of the parts I need to mainly be from one site (preferably newegg). Whatever you can recommend this is a business machine, and does not have to do anything hard. The simplest stuff would be best for the setup. Thanks for any help... $300 to spend on PC parts after the monitor so any suggestions would be great, especially if you can hit lower than $300.

My recommendations:-

CPU: Athlon XP 1700+ $42
HSF: Thermaltake Volcano 7 ~$15
Mobo: ASUS A7N266-VM $71
RAM: 1 x 256 MB Kingston PC2700 CL2.5 DDR $33
(Onboard graphics & sound)
HDD: Maxtor D740X (6E040L0) 40 GB $60
CD-RW: LiteOn 52x/24x/52x ~$45
FDD: TEAC 1.44 MB ~$10

Spend rest of the money for case and PSU

Great setup spitfire. If he picks up a good used monitor ($70) at his local used computer shop, he might even have enough left for a nic card if he needs one.
By the way spitfire have you been able to get a new cpu?

Hi! I went to newegg and out the following together:

Pro Source Full Tower case Model 606LUNA....25$
ASROCK mobo AMD Model K7-VM2................52$
(great ASUS mobo with USB2 and VGA/lan)
AMD Athlon XP 1700+ Thoroughbred /266......42$
Speeze CPU Fan Model 5R281B1H3G...............5.5$!!!
(not loud, more than enough)
GEIL 512MB PC-2700 (333MHz) DDR RAM.......57$
(you always need ram, even in a "business"
machine, and its cheap!)
Maxtor 40GB 7200RPM Model # 6E040L0........60$
Artec CDRW 52x24x52x IDE RETAIL W/ Nero...37$
SAMSUNG 1.44MB FLOPPY DRIVE...................6$
KBTEK 104 Keys Windows keyboard................5$
BLACK, 3-button, Scrolling Internet Retail........2$!
------------------------------------------------
(shipping not included) A grand total of...292$!

I especially looked in to the case and the cpu fan.
If you still want it cheaper go for a smaller HD and a ordinary CD-Rom and save about 26$. The Mobo is a good one unless you wan't to oc! About the HD go for the maxtor even if the WD is slightly faster because its very noisy.

PS don't even think of leaving the damn floppy out! You'll need it, sooner or later, but you WILL need it!

Motherboard - MSI K7N2GL - 99.00
Processor - Athlon XP 1700+ - 42.00
Ram - Samsung 256MB PC2700 - 28.00
Hard Disk - WD ATA/100 40GB 2MB 7200RPM - 57.00
CD - Lite On 52x - 22.00
Speakers - Juster 5d-107 7 PCS - 34.00
Case - Raidmax Model 208 10 Bay 350W PS - 43.00
KB/M - Logitech Optical Desktop - 28.00
Floppy - Teac Floppy Drive 1.44mb 12.00

That's 365.00... Best I can do without getting into crappy parts.

Course if you have some of those pieces (or can steal from a current pc) you can get away without buying them... (floppy, kb/m, etc.) which lowers the price a bit. These are from pricewatch and seperate places for the most part, but that price DOES include shipping. (Board has onboard, lan, sound, and video.) A second ram chip could be added later to get into dual mode, and a processor up to 3200+ could be added as an upgrade at a later point also... shrug.
