How to burn CDs slower

A friend has taken delivery of a Dell 3000 just this week.
He installed Alcohol 120%. to burn bin&cues
The only speed available to burn is 48X.
He would like to burn at a slower rate.

The only info on the CD-rw is that reported by device mgr:
HL-DT-ST-CD-RW-GCE 8483-B

At this point he does not know if this is a limitation from Alcohol or
the CDrw driver.

Is there any way to add slower speeds?
Or other software with slower speeds?(on similar systems)
This was NOT a problem with this program under Win98 and an LG burner
on his old computer.

It's a limitation of the CD burning software. There is no CD-RW driver in the
system. Windows or Linux sees a CD-RW as a simple CD-ROM drive. The burning
software is what sets the speed. It can detect the maximum burning speeds
supported by the device thru the industry-standard ASPI protocol and burn
accordingly. Most other burining software such as Roxio, Nero, NTI CD-Maker,
etc. allow you to change the speed at which a CD is burned. This is very handy
if you have some blank media certified to burn properly only at lower speeds.

Roxio lets you select the speed. It will also automatically slow down
the burn speed if it detects low quality CDs (I'm not sure how it does
this).

This can sometimes be a hassle, though - If I burn a low quality CD
(i.e., the house brand at the local store), it'll automatically slow
down to 4X and then won't let me select a higher speed until I've burned
several "good" CDs.

You CAN select the speed in Alcohol - from the "Write Speed" drop down menu,
next to the string (I am looking at it now)

Thanks for trying. Yes you can select another speed, IF alcohol has
other speeds available in the box.
In his case there aren't others selectable.
There is a variety of speeds available for alcohol on his other
computer. ( LG burner)
I was hoping someone wouldhave a registry edit, or inf file to reclaim
this functionality on his new computer.

As per original message only ifo available on his new dell burner was
from device magr GCE 8483-B HL etc

Oddly enough, he ordered another computer for his sister three days
later and arrived with a Samsung burner!

However, his experience indicates that Alcohol reportes the actual
burn speed at about 14X, so its not too bad for quality burns. But
still no good for the few images that the authors say to burn at 4X .
