I recently received this computer as a gift, and I opened it and now I cannot take it back, (stupid pc world policy) so I was wondering if anyone could help me with what I can upgrade in the region of motherboard and processor? 1.4ghz is truly awful and the max for an amd E1-1200 is 1.7ghz, but id really like 3.4 ghz? is there anyway of achieving this? with only changing the 2 mentioned above? thanks in advance!

Do you want to stay with AMD?
Something to be aware of: If you replace the motherboard, a new windows license is required since it will not load past the "loading windows" splash screen. Your operating system is tied to the motherboard.
It may be possible to replace the APU only (which would not require a new windows copy) but it's very unlikely HP supports the speeds you're looking for from that installed motherboard - not sure there

There is a question of the budget for the upgrades and whether you would like to stay with AMD or Intel as mentioned above. Personally they don't make much of a difference but a combination that I have on my pc is an intel motherboard with a pentium which is AMAZING for an everyday pc as i am assuming you are aiming for since there is no mention of a video card. So now it comes down to budget. An everyday pc doesn't need amazing specs but i can understand how painfully slow your processor may be, so i would recommend these two paired.

1. Mother board - http://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-GA-H61M-DS2-Intel-Micro-Motherboard/dp/B005PX3UYA/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1358640340&sr=1-2&keywords=lga+1155+motherboard

2. Processor - http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Pentium-Dual-Core-Processor-Cache/dp/B005LLBBSS/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1358640250&sr=1-1&keywords=intel+pentium+processor

(its 3Ghz not 3.4 but won't make that big of a difference)

total price 50 + 69 = $119 = £75
